The Al-Rifa'i Mosque was constructed in two phases over the period between 1869 and 1912, when it was finally completed. Al-Rifae' mosque has become a Royal Tomb for many of the Rifae' Memeluks as well as the Kings of Egypt during the 21st century.. Inside Masjid al-Rifae' lies Sidi Alei Abu Shibak one of the Rifae' Masters, Khedive Ismael (one of the decendants of Muhammad Ali, and one of the Egypt's rulers), King Fouad I & his son King Farouk (who was forced out of power by the 1952 Republican revolution in 1952), and Shah Reza Palhavi former Tyrant King of Iran who was also forced out of power by the Islamic Revolution of 1979, The Mosque is rectangular in shape, measuring some 6500 square meters in size. 1767 square meters of this area is reserved for praying, while the remainder is the mausoleum of the royal family.
